Our entry is an interactive experience of the history of print including Swift’s history. At the beginning of our experience patrons are asked to scan the QR code to hear this audible experience as they enjoyed the tidbits of knowledge.

Printing is EVERYWHERE and we’re so saturated with it that we don’t even realize it.
Take a moment to look around and see how many signs, banners and labels are
currently in your view. There are at least 20. Can you count them all? Behind you on the trash can it says, “trash only” that counts too. A print shop printed those.
At Swift Printing, we are obsessed with printing and printing technology. This exhibit is all about printing and our history as a family business in printing.

In the realm of human innovation, few inventions have had as profound an impact on society as the printing press. This remarkable invention, which revolutionized the way information was shared and preserved, has a history that dates back over a thousand years. Our journey through the history of printing begins in the year 618 and takes us on a fascinating ride through the ages.
The Invention of Woodblock Printing (618 - 9th Century)
Our journey begins in ancient China during the Tang Dynasty, around the year 618. This era witnessed the birth of woodblock printing, one of the earliest printing methods in human history. Woodblock printing involved carving characters or images onto wooden blocks, applying ink or pigment, and then pressing them onto paper or fabric. This innovation allowed for the mass production of texts and artwork, fundamentally changing the way knowledge was disseminated.
The Moveable Type Revolution (1040 - 11th Century)
Fast forward to the 11th century in China, where the ingenious Bi Sheng introduced an innovation that laid the groundwork for modern printing: moveable type. Bi Sheng's moveable clay type allowed for greater flexibility in printing, as individual characters could be arranged and rearranged as needed. This marked a significant leap forward in the efficiency of printing, making the process faster and more versatile.
The Gutenberg Press and the Printing Revolution (1440 - 15th Century)
One of the most pivotal moments in the history of printing occurred in the mid-15th century in Mainz, Germany, when Johannes Gutenberg unveiled his groundbreaking invention: the printing press. Gutenberg's press utilized moveable metal type, which made it possible to produce books and documents with unprecedented speed and accuracy. His most famous work, the Gutenberg Bible, became an iconic symbol of this printing revolution.
The Spread of Printing (16th - 18th Century)
The advent of the printing press led to a proliferation of printing technology across Europe and the world. In the 16th century, the spread of printed materials played a critical role in the Protestant Reformation, as Martin Luther's 95 Theses and other religious texts were disseminated widely. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Age of Enlightenment saw an explosion of printed literature, fostering the exchange of ideas and the growth of knowledge.

Industrialization and Mass Production (19th Century)
The 19th century witnessed further advancements in printing technology, including the development of steam-powered printing presses and the transition to mechanical typesetting. Today, 3D printing and advanced digital technologies continue to shape the future of printing.
As we reflect on this journey through the history of printing, it becomes evident that this invention has played an indispensable role in shaping human culture, knowledge, and communication. From the humble beginnings of woodblock printing in ancient China to the digital printing innovations of the 21st century, the evolution of printing has been nothing short of extraordinary. It reminds us of the enduring power of human creativity and the boundless possibilities of innovation.
