Customer Highlight: Joani Gill’s Business Cards

I love getting to know our customers. Whenever time permits, whether it's spending time at the office, grabbing coffee or lunch, or even randomly bumping into each other on the street and catching up on the latest news, it's one of my favorite things to do. Our next client feature is particularly exciting, as it comes with a fascinating backstory. While printing Joani's business cards, we discovered that she once had the extraordinary opportunity to meet President Bill Clinton. Join us as we delve into Joani's story and explore why she chooses Swift for her printing needs.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I returned home to West Michigan to raise my two children after an extraordinary career in the couture fashion industry. I was an image consultant, often referred to as a personal shopper, and I had the privilege of dressing television personalities, celebrities, international royalty, and Washington's upper echelon. Notable clients included Lisa Marie Presley, Andrea Mitchell (Chief White House Correspondent for NBC News), and Princess Haifa Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

Transitioning from the world of "leather and lace" to "nuts and bolts," I joined my family's manufacturing firm, Gill Industries, where I held leadership roles in Strategy, Public Relations, Communications, and Business Development. Growing up as the middle child of twelve, competitiveness, determination, and resilience were ingrained in me. In 2011, I ventured into the realm of "dollars and cents," embarking on a career in Finance and Insurance, eventually establishing my firm, EXITS, where I assisted business owners in successfully exiting their companies.

How did you get started in your business?

Last year, I embarked on another career path and realized that the common thread in all my endeavors is the personal, intimate, and trusting relationship I develop with my clients. Successfully serving their needs brings me the greatest joy. As I assessed my skills of empathic listening, warmheartedness, and professional expertise, Residential Real Estate felt like a natural fit for me.

What sets your business apart from others in the industry?

I believe in treating all people fairly, with respect, kindness, and professionalism. One afternoon when I worked at Neiman Marcus, I encountered a neglected customer and I gave her excellent service. She turned out to be the owner of Black Entertainment Television. This encounter not only led to a valued friendship but also exemplified my belief in providing exemplary service to everyone. Buying or selling a home is a significant life decision, and I consider it a privilege and an honor to serve my clients. While I cater to various areas, I focus on clients who are downsizing, particularly in the Forest Hills, Byron Center, and Ada markets.

How do you stay connected with your community or target audience?

After spending several years on our beautiful lakeshore, I am reconnecting with past business associates and fellow board members. I enjoy being active in the community and recently joined the Women of Habituate Kent, where I serve on the council and in fundraising efforts. I also utilize LinkedIn to reconnect with individuals and stay engaged with my target audience.

Why did you choose to work with Swift?

I have a deep appreciation for family businesses and their multi-generational success. Attending a Family Business Alliance event last year, I had the pleasure of meeting Jes and her family. When Jes's father handed me his Swift Printing business card, I was impressed by its quality and professionalism. Wanting business cards like theirs led me to choose Swift for my printing needs.

What’s a fun story you can share with us? 

One day I decided to deliver my client her clothing that had been finished being altered. I  drove to her house unannounced only to find that there was some event going on. This was obvious when I saw Densil Washington in the yard. I tried to tell the security guards that I would come back another time but they insisted on letting my client know I was there. She immediately told them to send me up. I drove up the hill and filled both my arms with Neiman Marcus garment bags. I opened the door into the massive foyer and there stood my client with a group of people. She immediately said, “Everybody, this is Joani. Joani, come meet Bill.” After putting the clothes in the closet, I walked over and was introduced to President Bill Clinton. As I shook his hand, my client said, “Bill, Joani dresses me.” With a glint in his eyes, he said, “And you do a very good job.”
